The season for rum and eggnog has passed and we’ve passed into the long, dark days. The passing of the holiday season does not mean the occasion for festive drinks is gone. These chilly days are where we are at our MOST Canadian. We jump between embracing the winter weather and escaping it. A sparkling white snowmobile run or quiet winter walk, followed by a toasty warm blanket fort and a cozy cocktail.

A “cozy cocktail” is so much more than rum and eggnog or hot chocolate. These drinks are bursting with festive fruit, snuggly spices, comfy creaminess, and even some fuzzy bubbles that make a Netflix night feel like a celebration of your couch.

Winter Sangria

Ingredients:

  • 1 pear, washed and sliced
  • 4 clementines, washed and sliced
  • 1 apple, washed and sliced
  • 1 cup pomegranate arils
  • 1/4 cup organic cane sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • ginger ale or club soda for serving
  • ice cubes

Directions:

Combine sliced fruit and pomegranate juice. Sprinkle with cane sugar and toss in a cinnamon stick. Pour red wine and orange juice over fruit. Stir well, then cover and refrigerate overnight or at least 6 hours. Remove cinnamon stick before serving. To serve, pour over ice, then top with ginger ale or club soda.

Black Velvet Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • brandy soaked cherries
  • 1 tsp crème de mure or crème de cassis
  • 4 oz Brut Sparkling
  • 4 oz Guinness or other stout beer

Directions:

Pour the sparkling wine into a chilled glass (cocktail glass, wine glass or champagne flute). Add the stout beer and the crème de mure or crème de cassis. Top with brandied cherries.

Moscow Mule

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup ginger beer (non-alcoholic)
  • 3 tbsp. fresh lime juice
  • 3 tbsp. club soda

Directions:

Combine ingredients in a copper mug 3/4 full of crushed ice. Stir, then garnish with a lime wedge.

The Perfect Hot Toddy

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 oz whiskey
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1-2 tsp. honey
  • 3 lemon wedges
  • 8-10 cloves

Directions:

Add whiskey and a generous amount of honey into a glass. Squeeze in a few lemon wedges and then pour the boiling water over it. Mix to dissolve. Smush the cloves into a lemon wedge, then add the lemon to the glass.

Mulled Wine

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup frozen cranberries
  • 1-2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 bottle dry, medium bodied red wine

Directions:

Cut the orange in half and then one half into quarters. Push 2-3 cloves into the quarter pieces. Peel a few strips of the orange peel from the half pieces for garnish. In a large pot, combine orange juice, sugar, cinnamon sticks, orange quarters with cloves and cranberries. Turn the heat to medium high and slowly heat the mixture, stirring occasionally until all the sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil once the sugar is completely dissolved and cook until it is thickened and reduced by almost half, about 15-20 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and pour in the wine. Simmer until wine is heated through. Don't boil, or the alcohol will evaporate. Strain the wine and pour into a slow cooker to keep it warm. Garnish with orange peel and serve warm.

Hot Butter Rum

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground clove
  • Boiling water
  • Spiced Rum
  • Whipped Cream

Directions:

Start your kettle and bring water to a boil. Blend all ingredients together except ice cream in a bowl, then add the ice cream and continue mixing until it is smooth. Take 2 tbsp of your mixture and place in a mug. Pour in a shot of rum over mixture. Then fill cup up the rest of the way with boiling water. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Session IPA Beergarita

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz tequila
  • 2 x 12 oz bottles of IPA
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup 
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Hop salt for garnish (Kosher salt works too)
  • 1 jalapeno sliced thin, seeds and ribs removed for garnish
  • 1/4 lime sliced for garnish

Directions:

In advance: fill an ice cube tray with water. In each slot, place a thin cross-section slice of jalapeno and/or lime. Freeze. In a pitcher mix tequila, beer, lime juice, lemon juice and simple syrup. Add the lemon and lime halves for extra flavour (if desired). Pour hop salt in a shallow dish. Moisten the rim of each glass with a lime wedge and dip into salt. Place 4-5 ice cubes in a glass. Fill glass with beergarita.

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz Angry Orchard Crisp Apple
  • 1 1/2 oz Fireball
  • 2 oz orange juice
  • 1 oz heavy cream
  • 1/2 oz vanilla syrup (simple syrup with vanilla)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Directions:

Combine ingredients, except Angry Orchard, in a shaker with ice. Strain into a glass with no ice. Top with Angry Orchard Crisp Apple. Garnish with a pinch of cinnamon sprinkled on top.

Snow Day Sling

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 oz whiskey
  • 1/2 oz mulled wine
  • 1/2 oz ginger liqueur (see our recipe on how to make your own at home)
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 3/4 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • Pineapple and clove garnish

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake until shaker base is frosty and cold. Strain into a glass over ice and garnish with a fresh piece of pineapple and cloves.

Ginger Liqueur

Ingredients:
  • 2 oz ginger root
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 orange
  • 1 1/2 cups brandy

Directions:

Peel the ginger and cut into thin sliced. Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise. Combine ginger, vanilla, sugar and water to boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the ginger is soft (about 20 minutes). Let it cool. Zest your orange and place the zest in a sealable bottle along with your syrup and brandy. Seal the bottle and shake well. Let sit for one day. After 1 day, remove the vanilla bean and let the mixture sit. After 2 days, strain your mixture through a coffee filter into a sealable container. Let sit for one more day before using.
